Postponed: Jazzy Sundays in the Parks with Mavis Staples Kickoff

A series of free concerts to celebrate the great musical legacy of jazz in Houston.

Discovery Green, the 12-acre park in the heart of downtown Houston, is partnering with Buffalo Bayou Partnership and Emancipation Park Conservancy this spring to celebrate the legacy of jazz in Houston with Jazzy Sundays in the Parks, a free live music series made possible by the Kinder Foundation.
Acclaimed American gospel and R&B singer and civil rights activist, Mavis Staples, headlines the series kickoff concert at Discovery Green on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m. with an opening performance by emerging jazz star and Houston native Marcos Varela.
The series features free, family-friendly concerts every Sunday in April at Discovery Green in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), presented in partnership with DACAMERA. Each concert will be preceded by a free workshop where kids can learn about music and instruments.
Jazzy Sundays continues with concerts and children’s music workshops every Sunday in May at The Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park, starting with a performance from Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band on Sunday, May 3, and throughout June at the historic Emancipation Park, including a special performance by Houston Jazz Collective Featuring Andre Hayward during the Emancipation Park Conservancy’s annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The events are free to attend.
