Celebrate & remember
Sunday, November 2
3 – 7 pm
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday where families and friends gather to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who are no longer living. Families will enjoy hands-on art activities, artist demos, vendors and more. Expect cultural performances and music by Houston’s own Nick Gaitan playing Tejas Roots Music (boleros, Tex Mex and Chicano Soul).
Discovery Green has commissioned Houston artist Angel Quesada with the help of students from Northside High School, Ana Bass and Kinder HSPVA, to build a community ofrenda, or altar, to help visitors remember their loved ones during Día de los Muertos. Visitors are invited to place images or recuerdos of their loved ones on the community altar. (Copies of photos only. Please do not bring anything irreplaceable.
Join us for an unforgettable night of music, memory, and tribute as we honor the soul of Houston through its rich musical traditions and vibrant cultural legacy. This musical ofrenda celebrates the city’s historic Wards and the rhythms born from them—reinforcing Houston’s role as a cultural beacon of the Gulf Coast.
Live Music Performance by Nick Gaitan & His Band
The evening’s live performance will be led by Nick Gaitan, accompanied by an all-star lineup of musicians from the bayou City. Gaitan will perform in his signature Tejas Roots style —a soulful fusion of Gulf Coast genres that echo the cultural tapestry of Texas. The set will feature traditional songs associated with Día de los Muertos, as well as heartfelt tributes to the legendary artists who helped shape Houston’s musical identity, cultivated the sounds and had its profound influence on the greater Gulf Coast sound.
Gaitan’s band featuring Houston all-stars like The Mighty Orq, Ruben Moreno ( Zydeco Re-Evolution), Louis Morales (Dem Roots), Jewelz Barron (Shame On Me) will pay tribute to great artists like:
Lightnin’ Hopkins
Clifton Chenier
Lydia Mendoza
Johnny Nash
Fito Olivares
Plus other pioneering women and men that were the trailblazing voices in Blues, R&B, Tejano, and Chicano Soul
