For hundreds of thousands of children, the thrill of running up the hill on the John P McGovern playground and sliding down is a cherished part of visiting Discovery Green. It’s just like sledding – minus the snow!
When the playground was redesigned in 2019, the architects took note of the many kids playing on the donor hill in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center. They decided to recreate that simple pleasure by placing a big turf covered hill near the playground. This is just one example of many of how visitors have helped create Discovery Green.
Now, with support from ExxonMobil, the hill has been refreshed and renewed. Kids will be happy to learn it will be open again in time for spring break.
That’s not the only change coming this spring:
Every year, Discovery Green surveys visitors to hear from the public what they would like to see improved in the park. One common request: more water fountains. We are proud to announce that ExxonMobil heard these pleas and gifted the park five new water fountains with dog bowl options for pets and water bottle re-fill stations.
Plus, the Gateway Fountains which are crucial for families looking to have fun and cool off over the warmer months are being upgraded as the Conservancy team does a deep clean and replaces worn equipment. Expect this to make a “big splash” when they come online again in March.
These improvements, and more, means that this spring and summer visitors will experience the best of Houston at Discovery Green. That’s big with all the FIFA visitors the city is expecting. Partnerships like these between Discovery Green and community partners like ExxonMobil are crucial for the quality-of-life Houstonians enjoy.
Through your efforts Discovery Green can continue to provide a beautiful oasis in the heart of downtown Houston where memories are made.
