Celebrating freedom
This Juneteenth at Discovery Green we’re celebrating freedom with a look at the music and history of Black culture.
A Houston connection:
Houston’s Grammy award winning children’s music artist James Pendleton IV will perform as Uncle Jumbo. Uncle Jumbo’s song and dance-a-long performances focus on joy, connection, kindness and wellbeing.
Bank of America’s Screen on the Green:
Then, enjoy a special Bank of America’s Screen on the Green viewing of Summer of Soul a Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s documentary highlighting The Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969. The film created from never seen and largely forgotten footage shows the impact the six-week festival had on Black history, music, fashion and culture. The movie is a depiction of “stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.”
