Discovery Green is open daily (including holidays) from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Hours for events vary. Areas of the park may be closed occasionally for maintenance or private events. The Gateway Fountain is open daily from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. (weather permitting). The Park Office is open daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. See park map.

General Park Information


Discovery Green is a 12-acre public park located in downtown Houston across Avenida de las Americas from the George R. Brown Convention Center and the Hilton Americas Hotel. Toyota Center, Houston Center, Minute Maid Park and Houston Pavilions are only blocks away. Although Discovery Green is a public space, it is privately managed by the Discovery Green Conservancy. Admission


Admission to Discovery Green is FREE, and the vast majority of the events in the park are also free. Activities that require a fee are clearly listed on this website. You are welcome to bring picnics, lawn chairs, blankets and even your dogs to the park. Please note that outside alcohol, glass containers, tables and pop up tents are prohibited. Food, beer & wine are available for purchase at The Lake House Cafe.

Information Center at the Alkek Building


Visit the park information center at the Alkek Building, located near the Gateway Fountain on the Andrea and Bill White Promenade. Staff is available to answer questions about the park, programming or rentals seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Public restrooms are located in the Alkek Building under the Stedman West Veranda. Additional restrooms are located in the Convention District Garage, located directly under Discovery Green.   

For the safety and enjoyment of all, Discovery Green manages park activity very carefully. Please see Park Rules pertaining to restroom facilities.

Parking at Discovery Green

Several parking options – including metered street parking, parking garages and surface lots – are conveniently available to park visitors.

PLEASE NOTE: Always read the posted signs, which supersede any instruction from park staff. Houston Police can and will issue tickets for illegal parking. See Visitor Parking Map. For more parking information, click here.
 
Metered Parking. Streets on the park’s perimeter and nearby streets offer metered parking. Parking meter stations on each block accept Visa/Mastercard and cash. Metered parking is in effect Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rates vary. Be sure to pay at the correct meter station. DO NOT park in valet zones, or commercial zones (red meters). Parking lanes may be closed for construction, mobility or other reasons, so PLEASE READ the posted signs when you park!

Surface lots. Lots are available around the perimeter of the park and on nearby streets. Rates vary and many accept Visa/Mastercard and cash.

Garage parking. Several parking garages offer convenient access to Discovery Green.

Greenlink - Downtown's Free Bus Service
Free and convenient transportation is returning to downtown with Greenlink, a new bus service. Through a partnership between the Downtown District, BG Group and Houston First Corporation, the downtown community can ride the environmentally friendly buses to get them to popular downtown locations quickly. Seven buses operate Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., approximately 7-10 minutes apart during peak hours. Check Greenlink website for stops and route information.

The Wave- Houston's Jitney Shuttle Service
Want to see Houston like a local? Catch The Wave, Houston’s jitney shuttle service. If you’re wondering what a jitney is, it is a “fixed rate, fixed route, circulator with seating for more than 9 & less than 15 passengers." It's a hybrid between a taxi, a limo, and a public bus. A taxi because The Wave can do some door to door service and you can call to get a pick-up. A limo because their vehicles have upgraded stereo, televisions, lights, seating, and other luxuries.
