Remember, if you will, way back in 2016. For many it was a “dumpster fire” year best remembered as the year we lost David Bowie and Prince. Which is why the internet went looking for a brighter story to follow.
Enter “Los XV de Rubí.”
The meme started when Crescencio Ibarra invited “everyone” to the quinceañera celebration for his daughter, Rubí Ibarra García. Mr. Ibarra posted it publicly on Facebook, never expecting that the world would consider themselves invited. Ultimately over 1.1 million people RSVP’d to the party.
In celebration of Discovery Green’s 15th anniversary, the park is throwing a quinceañera party and decided to spoof Mr. Ibarra’s deadpan delivery of the invitation. Then, we posted it to the internet in the hopes that all of Houston would consider themselves invited.
On May 7, 2023 from 12 – 5 pm the party begins with a free yoga class from 12 – 1 pm on the Grace Event Lawn, a dog costume contest starts at 1:15 (pre-registration required) and performances will be held on stage all day long:

The installation consists of a canopy that lights up when visitors power the electricity generating bicycles. More info at www.discoverygreen.com/quince
The day is a showcase of Houston’s diverse traditions and a celebration of the Discovery Green visitors who have made this 12-acre urban green space the vibrant community that it is.
