Introducing Julie Sudduth, Discovery Green’s Board of Directors’ Chair

Julie Sudduth, PNC Bank – Regional President is Discovery Green’s new Board of Director’s Chair

Discovery Green has been a haven for Houstonians for 14 years, and it has remained so, even despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic. The park has continued to offer free programming, public art and impeccable gardens and spaces for all to enjoy – and today, the park even boasts new playscapes for children that opened March 2021, drawing even more families to take advantage of this city oasis. New trees have been planted and beautiful LED lighting has been installed to light the path for the millions who visit this beloved space.

Nearly 15 years ago, Houston civic and philanthropic leaders combined forces Discovery Green a reality. Since opening in April 2008, Discovery Green has continued to be a destination that embraces the diversity that defines Houston. The Conservancy has intentionally sought to illuminate the diversity of talent across Houston with celebrated performers, artists, entrepreneurs and artisans from all walks of life. Discovery Green is a truly a place where all are welcome, and equity encouraged. In fact, I recently asked a donor recently why they love the park – among the reasons cited was free programming that promotes equitable access to the arts.

From 2008 to now, the Houston metro area’s population has increased by nearly 1.9 million people. As Houston welcomed so many new residents, the park continued to see exponential increases in attendance. As a function of this growth and higher usage of Discovery Green’s 12 acres, the Conservancy has continuously invested to preserve and position the park for the next 15 years. Generous philanthropic support has been provided since the onset of the pandemic so that Houstonian’s would continue to have access to free programming in a beautifully maintained space.

We invite you to be part of the continued sustainability of Discovery Green. Through generous donors and supporters, this vibrant destination in the heart of Houston’s urban core continues to be a refuge for Houstonians. Your support is essential to maintain this special. I encourage you to follow Discovery Green on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn to stay apprised of the latest happenings in the park.

I want to take a moment to commend the Conservancy’s team for their resolve and dedication to fulfilling the park’s mission of serving the Houston community. Thanks to their tireless, there is something for everyone at Discovery Green. Whether you’re interested in performing Yoga, kayaking on the Kinder Lake, visiting the Labyrinth, celebrating Pride at Rainbow on the Green or enjoying a concert, Discovery Green is eager to welcome you.

As we prepare to celebrate the park’s 15th anniversary, we encourage you to connect and discover why this park has earned a special place in the hearts of Houstonians.
