City of Houston honors Discovery Green Conservancy President Barry Mandel

After 13 years of service Discovery Green Conservancy President Barry Mandel is set to retire. In honor of his many accomplishments, and the impact his efforts have had on Discovery Green, the City of Houston has declared June 1, 2023 as Barry Mandel Day.

During the unveiling of the newest temporary art installation, for.ever.bloom by JoAnn Fleischhauer, Robert Gallegos and Abbie Kamin surprised Mandel with the following proclamation:  

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure and deep appreciation that we acknowledge the retirement of Barry Mandel, the esteemed President of Discovery Green, after 13 remarkable years of visionary leadership; and,

WHEREAS, Under President Mandel’s stewardship, Discovery Green has blossomed into a thriving urban oasis, captivating the hearts and minds of countless individuals who have sought solace, joy, and inspiration within its enchanting 12-acre grounds; and,

WHEREAS, As Discovery Green concludes its 15″ anniversary season, they commemorate his invaluable contributions, dedication, and unwavering commitment, which has been instrumental in shaping that remarkable space into a beacon of community engagement, cultural enrichment, and environmental stewardship; and,

WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, the President’s visionary approach has brought to life a dynamic calendar of events, festivals, art installations, and educational programs that have enriched the lives of Houstonians and visitors alike; and,

WHEREAS, Barry Mandel’s visionary leadership has fostered a welcoming environment where diverse communities converge, fostering dialogue, understanding, and unity among people from all walks of life. His indomitable spirit, passion, and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the landscape of our city, reminding us of the transformative power of public spaces to inspire, connect, and nurture the human spirit; and,

WHEREAS, The City of Houston honors and celebrates the outstanding achievements of Barry Mandel as President of Discovery Green. We applaud his unparalleled dedication, innovative vision, and profound impact on our city and its inhabitants; and

WHEREAS, In recognition and appreciation of his dedication and loyal service, the City of Houston congratulates and commends Barry Mandel on this milestone occasion. May Barry Mandel’s retirement be filled with joy, fulfillment, and new adventures, as he embarks on a well-deserved next chapter in his life. His legacy at Discovery Green will forever serve as a testament to the profound influence one person can have in shaping the fabric of a community.

THEREFORE, I, Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2023, as Barry Mandel Day in Houston, Texas.

In attendance for presentation of the proclamation were Barry Mandel, his husband Scott Sawyer, his 92-year-old mother Shirley Mandel, his sisters, his nephews and their families. Discovery Green Conservancy Chair Julie Sudduth gave opening remarks. Previous Discovery Green Conservancy President Guy Hagstette and future Discovery Green Conservancy President Kathryn Lott were also in attendance along with many board members, staff and friends.

A public presentation of the proclamation will be made Tuesday, June 6 at 1:30 p.m. during the City Council Meeting.
