These videos showcase the different ways Houston has come together to help save our planet.

Little Grouse on the Prairie
More than a million Attwaters Prairie Chickens lived on the high grass coasts of Texas and Louisiana. Southern urbanization and agricultural conversion in the 1900s caused this bird population to drop, placing them on the endangered species list in Texas. Since then, organization have come together to save the Attwaters Prairie Chicken and restore life in the south coast prairies. Learn what Texas wildlife centers and other organizations, like the Houston Zoo and NASA, are doing to accomplish their mission of feeding, protecting and repopulating these birds.

Saving Sea Turtles

From partnering with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), locating sick and injured turtles and implementing fishing line recycling bins to prevent Texas ocean life from getting entangled, the Houston Zoo took a series of actions to help the sea turtles from rehabilitation to release. Check out more of the Houston Zoo’s initiatives and how you can do your part in helping our aquatic life in the Gulf Coast!

Air Pollution post- Hurricane Harvey
After Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, it left some areas with a strong smell of gasoline lingering in their neighborhoods. Oil plants released several million pounds of air toxins due to damage from the natural disaster. Learn how the Environmental Defensive Fund (EDF) worked with local officials and technology partners to make a mobile air monitor that informed them about specific pollutions in the air. With this monitor they were able to tell communities almost immediately the type of air they were breathing.
