Celebrating French Culture at Discovery Green

The Fourth of July is fast approaching and we are gearing up to celebrate in our own special way! On July 3 and 4, Discovery Green will present the first annual MARAVILLOSO!, a contemporary circus event at Discovery Green. This year’s circus extravaganza features France-based Barolosolo Cirkus Company, along with Houston’s own Cirque La Vie and FrenetiCore Dance Company.

Created in 2006, Baralosolo has performed in several countries across the world including Brazil, Morocco, Australia and Russia, and will present the Texas debut of its show, "île O" at our park on Thursday, July 3. This performance will offer an outdoor, animal-free circus experience that combines comedy, music and acrobatics.

Joining Barolosolo at Maravilloso, are Cirque La Vie and FrenetiCore, both Houston-based artistic companies. Cirque La Vie, Houston’s one and only modern circus company, performs unique choreography, daring aerials and incredible contortion acts, minus the traditional circus setting. Cirque La Vie is co-led by Chloé St-Jean-Richard, one of the few Houston performers who have mastered the German Wheel. Creating cutting-edge multi-media dance theater productions unlike any others found in the Houston area, FrenetiCore Dance Company has performed in several festivals across the world and has collaborated with a variety of musicians and artists in the Houston area since 2003.

Maravilloso is supported in part by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, who provides a platform for exchange and innovation between French and American artists, intellectuals, educators, students, the tech community, and the general public.

Part of the Cultural Services, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication supports teaching, innovation and research in circus arts as well as the creation and presentation of circus arts at a regional and national level.

For the past two years the Cultural Services of the French Embassy has presented the annual French Cultures Festival at Discovery Green. The festival, a celebration of International Francophonie Day, is important to our city  because of the abundance of French culture found in Houston—where you can watch a variety of French movies, enjoy the works of French photographers, classic or modern painters, discover contemporary artists, meet a French theatre or a dance company in residence, and even experience circus arts such as those found within Cirque La Vie.

Maravilloso is free to the public, and will take place at Discovery Green on Thursday, July 3 and Friday, July 4, 7-10 pm. For more information or a full schedule of performances, visit here.

Please note: you cannot see Fourth of July fireworks from Discovery Green.
