‘Tis the Season for Ice Skating at Discovery Green!December 5, 2013
by Laura Prus The holiday season is here, and at Discovery Green it’s a winter wonderland!
Each winter we use recycled water from Kinder Lake to transform the area into an outdoor ice rink for family and friends to enjoy all season long! The ICE presented by XFINITY® is even bigger this year, and measuring 7,716-square feet, it is the largest outdoor ice rink in the Southwest!
Maintaining an ice rink in Houston can be tricky, but it has been a part of our vision for Discovery Green since day one. In fact, during the park’s planning stages, our team made many visits to parks across the country and instantly recognized the benefits ice skating brought to these parks. Most notably, ice skating is a healthy activity for the entire family to enjoy and beautifully blends athleticism and art, making it the perfect Discovery Green activity!
The ICE is operated and maintained by ICE RINK EVENTS, a Woodlands-based company with world class experience. For the last 16 years, their team has installed and/or operated nearly 500 ice rinks here around the world including rinks in Bryant Park in New York City, the Navy Pier rink in Chicago, and the Del Coronado “rink on the beach” in San Diego, not to mention Kosovo, Mexico City, South America, Beijing and more! Their expert ice rink knowledge allows us to provide exciting programming for an estimated 300,000 skaters and spectators this season!
