High Flying Fun!September 24, 2013
by Laura Prus What’s furry, friendly and flies across water? You guessed it – DockDogs!
The high-flying canine aquatics competition returns to Discovery Green for the sixth year September 27 – 29! Every year, the three-day, dog and family-friendly expo showcases four-legged athletes from Texas and beyond as they compete in high-jump, long jump and speed retrieve events. Some dogs leap as high as 24 feet in length, so be prepared for them to make a splash as they plunge into a 40-foot pool of water on Jones Lawn! We at Discovery Green love to bring talented performers from around the globe to the heart of Houston, but this weekend you will be truly astounded by the talents of pups from your own neighborhood!
Adding to the canine competition is the return of the Haute Dog Costume Contest presented by York’s HotSpot the Dog! Cuteness is in store on Saturday afternoon when Houston’s best dressed dogs battle it out in Celebreedy Look-a-Like, Dog-Gone Green, Pick of the Litter, and Rebarkable Royalty categories. Over the years, we’ve seen doggie Shamu, Superman, cowboy, princess, sheriff and even a Lego-Dog owner duo. There is no end to the creativity, and we can’t wait to see this year’s entrants! Be sure to be at the park Saturday at 2:30 to register. The top dogs (and owners) in each category will win great awards and prizes including a $500 concrete paver at Discovery Green!
This weekend’s programming is all about the most loyal and lovable member of the family, and there are numerous demonstrations, appearances, adoptions and dog-friendly vendors that will round out the fun. Special appearances from some of our favorite dog characters (some of whom have stopped by for story time during Toddler Tuesdays) will join us on Saturday. Be on the lookout for Clifford, Biscuit and Poky the Puppy!
Although the DockDogs fun only lasts this weekend, there is plenty of dog-gone fun to be had at Discovery Green! Check out The Kinder Large Dog Run and the Harriet and Joe Foster Small Dog Run year-round for a place for your dogs to play, exercise and enjoy the outdoors!
