Australia's Strange FruitSeptember 16, 2013
by Laura Prus Ready for some amazing entertainment? September 20 – 22, Australia’s Strange Fruit brings theater, dance and the circus to the Jones Lawn! Atop 14-foot poles, the group’s four dare devils will bend and sway to seemingly impossible angles and create a hypnotizing dance for audiences below to watch.
Australia’s Strange Fruit visited the park in 2009, and we couldn’t wait for them to return. Their performances appeal to all cultures and ages, which perfectly aligns with our goals of providing diverse, artistic programming for all Houstonians to enjoy!
This year, the cast of Australia’s Strange Fruit will perform Swoon!, a story of love, loss, joy and freedom. The U.S.-based cast made their 2013 debut this spring and has already performed in Tennessee, Virginia, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and will make their first appearance in Texas next week. We are excited to see this new group of former athletes and dancers at Discovery Green!
No other group in the world has been able to replicate the artistry Australia’s Strange Fruit creates in each performance, and audiences are continually astounded by the group’s acts in the air. The name Strange Fruit was conceived by the artist, Rod Poole in Melbourne, Australia in 1994. He had a dream of brightly dressed people swaying on top of stocks of wheat in a field. The extreme flexibility and strength of the 14-foot poles allows the performers the ability to bend back and forth. Each pole is custom created to the individual performer based on size, height and weight, down to the inch, so no two poles are alike
We’re happy to announce students have a unique opportunity to learn this special art form during a Master Class at Discovery Green on Sunday, September 22 at 12:30pm! Students ages 12+ with an interest in movement, dancing and acting are invited to push themselves in the art of dialogue-free storytelling. Note - because of the nature of the apparatus, there will be no poles or aerial movement. Space is limited, so please rsvp by filling out the form here.
Like all of our programs, the performances of Australia’s Strange Fruit are FREE to the public! However, if you make gift of $100 or more to Discovery Green in honor of our fifth birthday, you’ll receive two VIP tickets to the 8 pm performance on Friday, September 20. Tickets include reserved seating, food and drink vouchers, and the opportunity to meet the performers after the show! Visit our donate page or call (713) 800-4710 to make your gift today. Your donation will help support the 400+ free programs we offer every year.
