Fall Fun!August 19, 2013
by Laura Prus Can you believe fall is almost here? For us, the new season means more music, movies, fitness, special events and more!
Each season provides the opportunity for Houstonians to interact with the community, experience the diverse culture of Houston and make lasting memories. This season is no different and provides an array of free programs, including new meditation classes, a daytime jazzercise class, great licensed events like the Korean Festival and the return of DockDogs®!
Here’s a look at some of this season’s highlights:
AUSTRALIA’S STRANGE FRUIT – Mark your calendars for September 20 – 22 to witness the acrobatic troupe’s performance of “Swoon”! The spirited performance will soar above Jones Lawn as they bend and sway atop 14-foot tall polls to seemingly impossible angles to tell a spectacular story of love, loss, joy and freedom.
DOCKDOGS® – The dog jumping contest returns for its sixth appearance at Discovery Green from September 27 – 29. Dogs of all shapes and sizes will jump off the 20-foot dock into the 40-foot pool set up on Jones Lawn. Those who can jump the highest or the farthest go home a winner! Adding to the weekend’s competition is the Haute Dog Costume Contest. Bring your pup in his or her best outfit for the chance to win great prizes!
MUSIC – Get ready to rock this fall! Our Thursday Concerts presented by ExxonMobil kick off September 19 and bring spectacular talent to the hill. Five straight weeks of music begins with a rare appearance by Houston legend Robert Ellis. The series continues with Ray Wylie Hubbard, Young Mammals, The Wheel Workers, Del Castillo and Shemekia Copeland! Plus, our new Rock-tober Lunchtime Concerts bring a wide variety of music genres for you to enjoy every Wednesday in October!
MOVIES – What says “it’s fall in Texas” quite like football? The Houston Texan Cheerleaders and H-E-B will be here on September 6 for our first film of the fall, The Blind Side. IKEA Houston Screen on the Green has great free flicks in store as well including Up, The Great Gatsby, Frankenweenie and Moonrise Kingdom. Plus, don't miss the Chipotle Green Film Series screening of Eating Alabama and the Houston Public Media Silent Film Concert!
That’s not all; the fall contains fun for all! Be sure to check our full events calendar for weekly Toddler Tuesday activities, fitness classes, the Discovery Green Flea and much, much more. Don’t forget to join us this season and share your adventures with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
All of the programs this season, and every season, are made possible by the generosity of our visitors and other friends of the park. Discovery Green Conservancy is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization charged with developing and maintaining the park, and without community support, could not present a year-round calendar of events!
