Fountain Frenzy

It’s officially summer in Houston, and as we all know, the high temperatures are only getting started. One of favorite things about this season is watching children splash in the Gateway Fountain and take a break from the Houston heat. At one point, our Operations Director, Clark Curry, estimated 600 kids per day enjoyed the fountain in the summer. Of course, on a triple digit Houston day, that number can be much higher!

Luckily for all of our visitors, there is plenty of water to go around. The fountain is made up of 207 jets. The smaller jets – 192 in total – spray four feet high, and the 15 big jets spray 14 feet. When you add in a crowd of young visitors running along the sloping granite surface through these tall arches of water, it becomes one of the most fun, joyous (not to mention cool) places in Downtown!

Safety for our visitors and the environment remain our top priorities with the fountain and throughout the park. To ensure the health and happiness of all of our visitors, the fountain undergoes routine maintenance and cleaning. Our team replaced fountain lights and made repairs this spring, and ensured it was ready for the summer heat wave!

The fountain is also highly efficient and recycles filtered water from an underground reservoir source of 40,000 gallons of water. Approximately 500 gallons of water is filtered every minute, and it takes approximately an hour and 20 minutes to filter the entire amount! The water is also sanitized with bromine tablets and treated with UV rays.

Want to visit the Gateway Fountain? It’s open daily from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.! More information can be found here.
