Discovery Green Conservancy announces the appointment of Barry Mandel as president and park director for the Houston downtown park effective July 2010.  In this role, Mandel will be responsible for the executive management of park operations, programming, fundraising, and will continue to build upon the tremendous success of this downtown destination.

"In two short years, Discovery Green has captured the hearts of Houstonians and visitors alike," said Brady Carruth, Chairman of the board. "We are excited to welcome Barry Mandel to the team to provide the next level of leadership."

Mandel joins Discovery Green from Legacy Community Health Services, where he held the position of Chief Operating Officer and Capital Campaign Director for four years. A native Houstonian, Mandel has served for many years in the non-profit industry, both on the management side and on the board of directors level. Prior to his time at Legacy, Mandel served as the executive director of the Theater District for six years and was instrumental in the merger of the Theater District and the Downtown Houston Association to create the Houston Downtown Alliance, which he ran for an additional three years.

Mandel replaces Guy Hagstette, the Conservancy’s founding president and park director, who will stay on through the end of June. Hagstette was instrumental in the development, design, construction, and operation of Discovery Green, now one of Houston’s most beloved destinations and viewed by other major cities as an example of a successful urban green space. Hagstette will be consulting with Buffalo Bayou Partnership as it continues its ongoing successful work on Buffalo Bayou.
