Trouble getting in and around downtown? We’ve got some tools for you!June 11, 2012

I was in a meeting a few weeks ago and heard a comment about dreading a trip downtown. For someone who doesn’t work downtown, yes, it probably is a pretty intimidating adventure. But, we’ve got some tips for those of you making a trip downtown and getting around downtown.
Starting today (June 11), be on the look-out for the new GREENLINK bus service. Through a partnership between the Houston Downtown Management District (Downtown District), BG Group and Houston First Corporation, seven enviro-friendly buses will operate Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., approximately 7-10 minutes apart during peak hours. The route includes about 20 stops along Smith and Louisiana streets connecting to METRO transit, the convention corridor, hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Destinations on the route include Discovery Green (of course),Macy’s, Houston Pavilions, City Hall and the Central Library. The buses run on compressed natural gas, making them a cleaner transportation alternative.
Prefer getting around on two wheels? Consider the new B-cycle Bike Share Program. For short trips around downtown, B-cycle members can pick up a bike at B-stations located at Market Square, City Hall or the George R. Brown Convention Center and return it to that same station or any other B-station when they’re done. You can purchase a membership online or at any bike kiosk. Check it out!
If you simply cannot give up your air-conditioned car, then is a nifty tool for you. Instead of fiddling with coins and dollar bills for parking meters, download the Parkmobile app. When looking for street parking, pick spots with the green Parkmobile signs (hint: also has a cell phone logo), then use the mobile app to key in the parking space number and activate your parking session. The best part? Parkmobile will send a text 15 minutes before your parking session expires and you can extend your parking time all from your mobile phone. Heaven.
So, don’t stress getting in and around downtown. It’s just got a whole lot easier.
