Light as Air features inflatable sculptures by four nationally recognized artists May 28-31
Discovery Green presents Light as Air, a magnificent outdoor exhibition of inflatable art during park operating hours Thursday through Sunday, May 28 – 31. Four nationally recognized artists will display their interactive inflatable sculptures in different areas of the park and offer free performances and workshops for exhibition guests throughout the weekend. On Thursday, May 28 at 5:30 p.m., join the artists and curator Sara Kellner for an exhibition tour and discussion about their art work.
Susan Robb of Seattle will turn the Jones Lawn into a field of 50-foot tall waving black stalks with her haunting piece Warmth, Giant Black Toobs. Made from black plastic garbage bags, the Toobs will rise and wave as they warm in the sun. Watch a video clip of Robb’s Toobs. Join Robb on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a hands-on kite making workshop where you will transform ordinary plastic bags and bamboo into fantastic flying bugs. Appropriate for ages 5 and up with adult supervision recommended for children 10 and younger.
Pat Oleszko of New York is known for her wild, oftentimes provocative inflatable costumes. Her work, Footloose and Fantasy Free, will be on display at Discovery Green.
Houston-based artist Sharon Engelstein’s bubbly inflatable sculptures will delight audiences with their balloon-like whimsicality suggesting abstract animals, the division of cells and bulbous candy. Engelstein will feature two works: Tethertwin and Green Golly.
David Graeve’s internally lit photographic balloons made their debut hanging from the oak trees at Discovery Green during its winter 2008 season. Bringing to life photographs taken by Graeve and students of FUUSA, the globes will return for Light as Air, this time suspended on the surface of Kinder Lake.
