The National Museum of Mexican Art and Discovery Green Present Divinas 2009 with Norma Zenteno, Tania Libertad and Eugenia León Saturday, March 21

Free event to feature three exceptional Latin performers

On Saturday, March 21, the National Museum of Mexican Art, in partnership with Discovery Green, presents the Divinas Concert as part of the 2009 Texas Sor Juana Festival. The festival, celebrated in several cities including Houston, honors the legacy of Sor Juana Inés de La Cruz and pays tribute to the rich artistic accomplishments of Mexican women from Mexico and the United States. The event at Discovery Green will showcase three high-profile Mexican women artists on one stage. From Mexico comes headliner Eugenia León. Norma Zenteno and Tania Libertad will also perform, along with special pre-show artists, Girl in a Coma. Celebrate women, culture and art!

In 1994, the National Museum of Mexican Art initiated the Sor Juana Festival: A Tribute to Mexican Women. In 1998, the National Museum of Mexican Art initiated the Sor Juana Women of Achievement Awards, honoring women of Mexican descent with extraordinary artistic, cultural and academic achievements. The festival is currently celebrated in Chicago, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Milwaukee and San Antonio with plans of further expansion into other states, making it the largest Mexican performing arts festival in the country and the only festival of its kind dedicated to Mexican women.

Norma Zenteno You could argue that Norma Zenteno doesn't fit in any categorization. Norma received her first electric guitar from her father, acclaimed trumpet player, Roberto Zenteno at age 11. Since that day, Norma has been writing and performing her own music. But then, you could also argue that Norma, could fit in just about anywhere. She's jazz, she's latin, she's funked-up fusion, she's rock and roll, she is an original! Sometimes all within the span of a single blistering evening.

Tania Libertad was born in Peru. Today she is a citizen of Mexico, where she has been based for more than 30 years and her singing career has flourished. With more than 30 recordings to her name, Tania has established herself as an icon throughout Latin America and the world. From nueva trova and boleros to Afro-Peruvian and contemporary music, Tania has successfully mastered different genres and shown to be an artist “sin bandera” or of the world.

Eugenia León, considered by many to be the greatest singer in Mexico, has garnered international acclaim for her powerful voice and incomparable and elegant yet demanding stage presence. With a repertoire ranging from contemporary to traditional Mexican and Latin American music, Eugenia Leon has proven herself to be a well-versed artist and a master of performance.
